NBC "Gets in Shape" for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 with Wyse Thin Clients

Using Reliable Thin-Client Devices to Edit and File Stories, NBC Won't Get Snowed In Covering the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 in Salt Lake City

- Wyse® Technology today announced the company's thin clients are being used by NBC in connection with its coverage of the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 in Salt Lake City. NBC has chosen to "get thin" for the Olympics by deploying Wyse thin clients instead of personal computers or laptops to help on and off-air staff deliver fast-breaking news of Olympic events as it happens. Whether used for covering stories of this year's Olympic luge or speed skating competitions or any other event, Wyse thin clients perform faster than a four-man bobsled team on a medal run, while providing increased security of information and simplified remote management of desktops.

"With more than 180 events taking place at the Olympic Winter Games of 2002, NBC cannot afford desktop challenges that would prevent our reporters in the field from delivering timely coverage," said Sally Hughes, project manager, NBC Production Systems. "Wyse Technology's secure, managed thin-client solutions were instrumental in helping us cover the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney Australia and the 2000 Republican and Democratic National Conventions. With the ability to handle remote configurations and upgrades, Wyse thin clients will help us deliver coverage of the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 while minimizing overhead costs and performance concerns for technology."

The Wyse 3000 series terminals, utilizing Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 server edition, will enable NBC to connect directly to the Avstar newsroom system and OMAR video libraries to compose, review and edit stories for the on-air staff. NBC will also have access to Microsoft Office and email applications through the thin clients. In addition, the sleek, durable units allow for a greater number of terminals in a confined space.

"In an environment where timeliness and deadlines are crucial to business, it is important to have a desktop device that can perform flawlessly in even the harshest of conditions-like in twenty degree weather at a downhill ski race or bobsled competition," said Brad Rowland, director of product management at Wyse Technology. "Wyse terminals offer the security, manageability and affordability desired by our broad spectrum of thin-client customers."
