Wyse Technology Dominates Thin-client Market for the Fifth Consecutive Year as Overall Market Shipments Grow
IDC Bulletin Shows Wyses Domination with more than 50 Percent Market Share Across All Channels; Thin Client Shipments Grow 20 Percent in 2001 as PC Shipments Decline
San Jose, CA –
2002/07/29 -
Wyse Technology, the worldwide leader in secure, managed thin clients, today announced the company successfully retained the number one position in the thin-client market for the fifth consecutive year, according to a recent report (1) from IDC. IDCs report on the enterprise thin-client market states that Wyse Technology secured 38 percent of the overall worldwide enterprise thin-client market in 2001 when counting Wyse branded products, with U.S. market share jumping from 37 percent to 50 percent. Additionally, when including all thin clients manufactured by Wyse and sold by OEM partners, Wyse market share jumps to 50 percent of all thin clients sold worldwide in 2001. IDC secured information for the bulletin from major vendors and channel partners, as well as through analysis of shipment records.
As previously reported in a News.com story on January 17, 2002, IDC reported that 2001 worldwide PC shipments declined five percent, and the PC industry witnessed a 12 percent decline in the U.S. By comparison, while thin clients enjoyed steady year-over-year growth with overall shipments for the year growing by more than 20 percent. Thin-client computing continues to emerge as a secure, managed, affordable and reliable alternative to personal computers in many of todays business environments. It is common for organizations to migrate task-oriented workers first, and then to expand to general-office workers.
The thin-client market continues to show a healthy growth rate as the worldwide economic slowdown has put renewed emphasis on justifying IT purchases, particularly when it comes to ROI. Thin clients offer an excellent ROI, particularly when compared to standalone PCs, said Bob ODonnell, research director, device technology at IDC. Additionally, the growing demands for simplicity in IT infrastructure and the sensitivity of IT managers towards better security in the security conscious, post-9/11 world will encourage IT decision makers to more frequently consider thin clients.
Wyse Technology is the domain expert in the thin-client market and differentiates through superior knowledge of every aspect of the thin-client ecosystem from the server, through the network, to the desktop. Wyse continues to grow its domain expertise in the thin-client market and maintain its leadership position through ongoing investment in technology development and strong industry partnerships.
"2001 was a great year for Wyse and for thin clients in a time when economic hardship and limited or negative growth plagued many technology industries, said George Skaff, vice president of worldwide marketing for Wyse Technology. We expanded our market leadership, landed major customers in key vertical markets such as healthcare and retail, helped the industry set new standards for product pricing and extended our value to enterprise customers through enhanced products."
